Course Description:
Infant Oral Assessments
“When should my child first see the dentist?” If your patients are asking this question, they may be unaware of the AAPD, AAP, ADA and AHDA’s endorsement for first dental visit by age one. Despite this recommendation, Early Childhood Caries remains to be problematic in the United States. Left untreated, ECC contributes to more than 200,000 emergency department visits by children annually.
This course will focus on the importance of establishing a dental home, identifying caries risk, and strategizing on ways to prevent caries in children. In addition, a scientific review of oral embryology, tooth development and caries etiology is presented. The key components of the knee to knee exam are revealed as well as, guidance for parents in the event of a Traumatic Dental Emergency. Completion of this course will increase knowledge of dental anomalies, when to refer, and how to document D0145 (Infant Oral Assessment- oral evaluation for a patient under three years of age and counseling with primary caregiver).
As dental prevention specialists, each successful infant oral assessment performed creates a foundation for healthier children, positive dental visits, predictable outcomes, and many reasons to smile.
