Medical Emergencies: Essentials for the Dental Professional

Ellen Grimes, RDH, MA, MPA, Ed.D.

Dr. Grimes is the retired Vermont Technical College Dental Hygiene Program Director.  Prior to the transition of the program to Vermont Tech she taught in the Dental Hygiene Department at the University of Vermont since 1984.  Her areas of expertise are the Dental Sciences, Medical Emergencies, Clinical Dental Hygiene, Oral Pathology and the Administration of Local Anesthetics.  She was the recipient of the 2001 UVM Kroepsch Maurice Award for teaching excellence.

Ellen received her Baccalaureate Degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the University of Bridgeport, Fones School of Dental Hygiene.  She earned a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology from Montclair State University and a second Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Vermont.  She earned a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at UVM in 1999.

Ellen was the President of the Vermont Dental Hygienists' Association from 1993-1994 and has served that organization in numerous capacities over the past 25 years.  In 1998 she was honored with the VDHA Outstanding Dental Hygienist of the Year Award.  She is a Past President of the Summa Chapter of the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society.  Ellen was appointed as an accreditation site visitor for the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation in 1999 and served two terms on the Dental Hygiene Review Committee. She is a consultant for the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners and was serves on its Examination Committee.    In addition, she was appointed to the Dental Hygiene National Board Test Construction Committee in 2008 and again in 2016.   She is the author of the textbook, “Medical Emergencies:  Essentials for the Dental Professional” now in its second edition.

Course Description:

Dental hygiene and dental visits still remain anxiety-inducing experiences for some patients. This heightened anxiety level can increase the risk of medical emergencies occurring during appointments. This course will utilize simulated emergencies to promote the determination of the correct emergency diagnosis and the proper treatment procedures to be rendered by the dental professional in the event that an emergency should arise. A wide array of emergencies will be covered from syncope to anaphylactic shock. Highlighted will be the prevention of medical emergencies by the use of appropriate assessment procedures prior to treatment. The importance of preparing and maintaining an adequate medical emergency kit will be emphasized.

Course Objectives: 

  1. State the rationale for baseline vital signs.
  2. Understand the importance of medical emergency simulation.
  3. Understand the importance of current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
  4. Recognize the symptoms of several medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office.
  5. Explain the emergency procedure to be followed for several medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office.
  6. Identify essential emergency equipment for the emergency cart.

 


Infection Control

Cathy Turbyne, RDH, MS, Ed.D.

Dr. Turbyne is founder and President of Turbyne & Associates, an OSHA/Risk Management and Human Resource/Business Management Development Firm. Her 35 years experience in OSHA and the human resource field includes corporate Human Resource and Environmental management, health care and industrial site audits, program and training design, implementation and maintenance of compliance/management programs for those clients.  

She is also an administrator for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessment (CDCA) formerly known as the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners, a former Instructor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA., and Past President and Life Member of the American Dental Hygienists Association. She is an AGD/PACE certified instructor.

Goal:

To provide a safe working environment for dental health care personnel and their patients by adopting measures that reduces health care-associated infections among patients and occupational exposures among dental health care personnel.

Course Objectives:

  1. Determine Current & Emerging Disease Trends that pose the greatest risk for Global Health Security and the US population.
  2. Understand/facilitate/implement effective clinical safety and infection control knowledge and skills that will protect the patient, the provider, and maintain current CDC and OSHA (6/21) compliant infection control and injury/exposure management.
  3. Discuss Legal and Ethical situations of Infection Control Compliance.

  • Discuss the World Health Organization Predictions for current and future disease trends.
  • Review Mandated Risk Management Procedures: CDC/OSHA-6/2021
  • Administrative, HBV Vaccination Program, New Hire TB screening requirements/recordkeeping and Standard Operating Procedures, Exposure Management, Contractors, Temporary Employees
  • Standard Precautions, Hand Washing/Hand Disinfectants
  • Engineering Controls; Items to protect staff and patients from exposure./PPE
  • Work practice Controls what is acceptable, what isn't in infection Control

Poor Oral Health and Cognitive Decline

Carol Jahn, RDH, MS is the Director of Professional Relations & Education for Water Pik, Inc. She has been providing continuing education courses for more than 25 years. Carol is an author, speaker, and industry leader and has published numerous articles and contributed to several textbooks.

She has presented courses at the Yankee Dental Meeting, Chicago Midwinter Meeting, California Dental Meeting, Greater New York Dental Meeting, ADHA Annual Meeting, RDH UOR, and many more. She has published numerous articles and contributed to several textbooks.

Course Description:

By 2030, about 1 in 5 adults will be aged 65 and older. Around 60% of this demographic will have some form of periodontal disease. More than 5 million will have Alzheimer’s disease. Recent scientific findings have found that the periodontal pathogen, p. gingivalis can invade and inflame areas of the brain affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. Other studies have found that people with oral inflammation have increased cognitive decline. This course will examine the emerging evidence linking periodontal health and Alzheimer’s disease.

Course Objectives: 

  • Discover of the potential role ofp.gingivalis and the herpes virus in brain inflammation
  • Evaluate the research showing how periodontal disease may increase the risk and/or worsen dementias and cognitive decline
  • Discuss the role periodontal therapy and good oral hygiene may have on brain health
