Eating Disorders Through the Eyes of a Hygienist Mother

Course Description

Have you found yourself treating a patient whom you suspect might have an eating disorder (ED), only to find that you stumble on your words when approaching the subject? You are not alone! Communicating with patients, in general, can be daunting, but approaching a delicate topic such as ED’s can create barriers in communication and education with your ED patient.

Over twenty-eight million Americans live with an eating disorder (1), which exemplifies that most dental practices will treat patients with EDs; some who are open about their treatment and recovery, and others who will hide it. Bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa are well known ED types. Did you know binge eating, laxative use, orthorexia, pica, compulsive exercising, and rumination disorders (2) are other classified conditions?

Dental professionals possess many tools that can aid in assessing patients and could be the first healthcare personnel to recognize various cardinal signs and symptoms which can uncover an ED in patients. Use of appropriate techniques, with such patients who tend to struggle with entrusting others, is crucial in developing trustworthy connections with their dental team.

Collaboration with a patient’s treatment and recovery team can aid in understanding the treatment journey, which includes a variety of treatment modalities patients may experience ongoing; thus, understanding each setting is an important piece of information in best serving a patient’s needs. Dental professionals may meet patients, who are not seeking treatment; however, the dental professional can be a resource to encourage patients to consider a medical referral in determining if treatment is right for them. In any case, dental professionals are in a unique position to walk alongside the patient’s ED treatment and recovery journey as a trusted professional, who has the holistic interest of the patient at heart.

Course Description

Oftentimes, dental hygienists are met with expectations from their practice managers to achieve certain goals; one of them being production. The word production can feel off-putting in healthcare settings and can create barriers among healthcare teams because healthcare providers simply want to place patient care at the forefront of their practice.

“Where’s the Perio?” course will demonstrate that patient care can and always needs to be at the forefront of dental hygiene practice, while also meeting goals and achieving successful outcomes for healthcare providers, practice managers, and patients. Attendees will be exposed to simple principles, which will guide them throughout their practice, including dental hygiene process of care, communication strategies, optimization of structuring an effective periodontal therapy program that will increase patient outcomes and maintaining an appropriate schedule in achieving overarching goals for their practice. The course will provide active learning through collaboration among peers, which offers attendees an opportunity to learn from one another’s experiences and expertise.

Heather Miller

Heather is passionate about oral health and preventive dentistry.  She started her career as a Dental Assistant and has been practicing Dental Hygiene in New Hampshire and Massachusetts for the last 15 years. She was an educator with The Waterpik Company and is now a full time Preventive Care Consultant with Elevate Oral Care.  She strives to use her extensive background as a clinical dental hygienist, along with wisdom gained from thought leaders, to truly impact patient care.
